Vampire Survivors Dev Poncle Outlines Challenges of Film Adaptation: 'The Game Has No Plot'

by Hannah Mar 17,2025

Vampire Survivors developer Poncle has revealed the considerable challenges in adapting the game into a film, a shift from its initial announcement as an animated series. The core difficulty, as Poncle readily admits, stems from the game's inherent lack of a plot.

Despite this hurdle, Poncle confirmed ongoing collaboration with Story Kitchen on a live-action film adaptation. In a recent Steam post, the developer emphasized the importance of finding the right partners, highlighting the need for "good ideas, creativity, and that quirky knowledge of the game" to successfully translate its unique essence to the big screen. This, Poncle notes, is a difficult combination to achieve perfectly.

The absence of a narrative presents a unique creative challenge. Poncle wryly acknowledges the irony, previously stating (somewhat sarcastically) that "the most important thing in Vampire Survivors is the story," further emphasizing the unconventional nature of the adaptation. Consequently, a release date remains unannounced, as even Poncle admits the adaptation's direction is still evolving.

Vampire Survivors, a fast-paced gothic horror rogue-lite, gained unexpected popularity after its Steam release. Its simple yet surprisingly deep gameplay loop, involving overwhelming hordes of enemies and strategic character/weapon combinations, captivated players. The game's success led to significant content additions, now boasting 50 playable characters and 80 weapons, alongside two major expansions and the Ode to Castlevania DLC.

IGN's 8/10 review described the game as "outwardly simple but...an incredibly deep hole to fall down," acknowledging its potential for lulls once players master its mechanics.
