Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: Addressing a Turbulent Launch
The highly anticipated release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 experienced a challenging launch, marked by widespread server issues, bugs, and instability. Jorg Neumann, head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Sebastian Wloch, CEO of Asobo Studio, addressed these concerns in a YouTube video.
Unexpected Demand Overwhelms Servers
Neumann and Wloch attributed the problems to an unexpectedly high number of players simultaneously accessing the game's servers. The influx of users overwhelmed the game's infrastructure, causing significant strain on the data retrieval process. The system, tested with 200,000 simulated users, proved insufficient for the actual player base. Wloch explained that the initial login process involves retrieving data from a server database, and this process was severely hampered by the overload.
Login Queues and Missing Content
Attempts to mitigate the issue by increasing the login queue size and speed were only temporarily successful. The database cache repeatedly collapsed under the pressure, leading to extended loading times and, in some cases, the game freezing at 97% loading. Reports of missing aircraft and other game content stemmed from this server overload, preventing complete data downloads.
Negative Steam Reviews
The launch issues resulted in a significant amount of negative feedback on Steam, with players reporting long login queues and missing in-game assets. The game currently holds a "Mostly Negative" rating on the platform.
Ongoing Resolution Efforts
Despite the setbacks, the development team has been actively working to resolve the problems. The Steam page now indicates that the issues have been addressed and players are now being admitted at a more manageable rate. A sincere apology was issued, and continued updates are promised via social media, forums, and the game's website.
