Director Andy Muschietti Provides Update on Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation
Director Andy Muschietti (known for It and The Flash) recently offered an update on the long-awaited film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. While the project, initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009 with game director Fumito Ueda involved, has faced delays, Muschietti confirmed it's far from abandoned.
The director attributed the extended development time to factors beyond creative control, specifically citing ongoing discussions regarding the film's budget and the significant popularity of the source material. He confirmed the existence of a preferred script among several versions. This aligns with Sony's recent announcement of multiple video game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated feature.
Muschietti, while acknowledging he's not a hardcore gamer, called Shadow of the Colossus a masterpiece and stated he's played it multiple times. The film aims to capture the game's unique atmosphere and iconic colossal enemies, a challenge also faced by other projects, such as Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2, which drew inspiration from the original game. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remaster, Shadow of the Colossus' enduring appeal continues to drive the live-action adaptation, promising to engage both existing fans and newcomers to its captivating world. The legacy of Fumito Ueda's original vision, further echoed in his studio GenDesign's newly announced sci-fi title (revealed at The Game Awards 2024), ensures the enduring power of this iconic game.
