Avowed Sequel/DLC Hinted At as Sales Numbers Satisfy Obsidian and Microsoft
The successful launch of Avowed has sparked excitement about the future of the franchise. With impressive sales figures that have pleased both Microsoft and Obsidian, the game's director, Carrie Patel, has hinted at potential expansions or sequels during an insightful interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025.
Avowed Director Wants To Do More With The World They Built
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels
Following Avowed's successful release, Patel expressed her enthusiasm for continuing the journey within the game's universe. Although no concrete plans have been announced, she is eager to explore further possibilities. "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it," Patel remarked, hinting at her interest in developing both expansions and a sequel.
Changes in Avowed During Development
The development journey of Avowed was fraught with challenges and significant changes. Initially started in 2018, the project saw Obsidian navigating through the complexities of being an independent studio before Microsoft's acquisition in 2020. Patel, who took over leadership in January 2021, led the project through a reboot that involved scaling back on certain features, including multiplayer aspects, and shifting from an open world to open zones. Managing a team of over 80 people during this reevaluation was a daunting task, but Patel's focus on enhancing the narrative and lore from the Pillars of Eternity series proved fruitful. "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together," she reflected on the process.
Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed reigniting interest in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is now considering expanding its universe with a tactics game. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, the director of Pillars of Eternity and its sequel, expressed the studio's interest in developing 'Pillars: Tactics'. "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games," Sawyer noted, acknowledging the challenges in determining the project's scope, team size, and visual quality. Despite this, Sawyer remains focused on his ambition to create Pillars of Eternity 3, aiming for a budget on par with that of Baldur’s Gate 3, which stands at $100 million.
