Ubisoft Faces Inquiry Over Abuse Allegations

Ubisoft Responds to Disturbing Abuse Allegations at External Studio

Ubisoft has issued a statement expressing deep concern regarding allegations of severe mental and physical abuse at Brandoville Studio, an external support studio that contributed to Assassin's Creed Shadows. While the abuse did not occur within Ubisoft itself, the company strongly condemns such actions and highlights the urgent need for improved worker protections within the gaming industry.

A recent investigative report by the YouTube channel People Make Games detailed harrowing accounts of abuse allegedly perpetrated by Kwan Cherry Lai, the commissioner of the Brandoville development team and wife of the CEO. These accounts include claims of mental and physical abuse against employee Christa Sydney, forced religious practices, extreme sleep deprivation, and even coercion into self-harm while being filmed.

These allegations extend beyond Sydney, with multiple former Brandoville employees coming forward with similar stories. Reports include accusations of salary manipulation and the overworking of a pregnant employee, resulting in premature birth and the subsequent death of the child.

Brandoville's Legacy and Ongoing Investigation

Established in 2018 and based in Indonesia, Brandoville ceased operations in August 2024. Allegations of abuse, dating back to 2019, have surfaced, prompting an investigation by Indonesian authorities. Brandoville's portfolio includes work on notable titles such as Age of Empires 4 and Assassin's Creed Shadows. While police seek to question Kwan Cherry Lai, her reported relocation to Hong Kong complicates the investigation.

The pursuit of justice for those allegedly abused remains uncertain. This incident underscores a broader issue of systemic problems within the gaming industry, encompassing poor working conditions, abuse, and harassment. The need for stronger employee protections, both from internal and external sources, is paramount. The industry must actively address these issues to ensure a safer and more ethical work environment for all.
