Dune: Awakening Developers Explain Sandworm Behavior

by Mia Apr 03,2025

In *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms are portrayed as a natural force within the game environment, rather than creatures that players can summon at their convenience. Unlike the original novels by Frank Herbert, where characters could use a thumper to call upon these majestic beasts, this feature will not be part of the gameplay. Instead, sandworms function as NPCs with predetermined patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors integrated into the game engine. Players cannot strategically summon a sandworm near an enemy's base to disrupt their opponents. However, if a sandworm is already in the vicinity, players might attract its attention by moving actively through the sand or using a thumper, though there's no guarantee that the worm will respond and appear in the area.

The iconic act of riding sandworms, a staple of the Freman culture in Herbert's novels and brought to life in the Dune cinematic universe, will not be available at the launch of *Dune: Awakening*. The developers have cited pressure from the filmmakers behind the Dune movies as the reason for excluding this feature. However, there is hope for fans of the Freman culture, as post-launch updates may introduce additional content related to their traditions, including the possibility of worm-riding mechanics. For now, though, there are no guarantees that players will get to engage in this legendary activity.

*Dune: Awakening* is set to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow later.
