Welch, BG3's companion narrative lead, lauded the scene as a "watershed moment," praising Larian Studios for actively engaging with the game's fanfiction community. This, he noted, is a rare and commendable approach within the gaming industry.
The romance option with Halsin, a druid capable of shifting into a bear, wasn't initially planned. However, the game's fanfiction community's strong desire for a "Daddy Halsin" storyline influenced the developers. Welch confirmed to Eurogamer that Halsin's romantic arc wasn't initially conceived, but evolved organically from fan creations.
Welch's presentation emphasized fanfiction's crucial role in maintaining community engagement, particularly for romance aspects. He noted that these fan-created narratives often extend a game's lifespan and foster ongoing discussion. This community, he added, is particularly strong among women and LGBTQIA+ players, a key demographic in BG3's enthusiastic reception.
Welch stated that the bear romance scene represents a significant shift, where the fanfiction community is no longer a niche group, but a major audience actively catered to by the game's developers.

The concept of Halsin's bear form in a romantic context began as a lighthearted, off-screen joke. However, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke and senior writer John Corcoran recognized its potential and developed it into a core element of Halsin's character arc.
Welch revealed that the bear transformation was initially intended as a discarded gag. However, Vincke and Corcoran, while developing more substantial romance scenes, decided to incorporate and expand upon this idea, transforming it into a significant feature of Halsin's storyline.
