Sony addressed the nearly day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, attributing it to an "operational issue" in a social media statement. The company offered no specifics regarding the problem's root cause or preventative measures for future incidents.
To compensate affected users, PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a five-day extension to their subscriptions, automatically applied to their accounts.
The outage significantly impacted gameplay, with over one-third of players unable to log in and others reporting server crashes.
Sony's requirement of a PSN account, even for single-player PC games, has drawn criticism, and this outage further fuels those concerns.
This isn't the first major PSN disruption. The April 2011 data breach resulted in over 20 days of connectivity issues. While less severe, the recent outage has left many PS5 users frustrated by Sony's lack of detailed explanation.
