Destiny 2 Username Glitch: Bungie Names Replaced

Bungie to Issue Name Change Tokens

Following a recent update (around August 14th), many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been unexpectedly replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This widespread issue stemmed from a bug within Bungie's name moderation tool.

Bungie acknowledged the problem on Twitter (X), stating: "We're tracking an issue where many account names were changed by our Bungie name moderation tool. We're investigating and will provide an update tomorrow, including details on additional name change tokens for all players."

Bungie's system typically alters usernames violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this incident affected numerous players with perfectly acceptable, long-standing names – some dating back to 2015.

Bungie swiftly investigated, confirming the significant number of affected players via a series of tweets. They subsequently identified and fixed the root cause, preventing further accidental name changes. Their Twitter (X) update stated: "The issue causing widespread Bungie name changes has been identified and fixed server-side."

They confirmed plans to distribute free name change tokens to all players as compensation, promising further updates as they become available.

Affected players are advised to remain patient and await further communication from Bungie regarding the distribution of name change tokens.
