Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a complete shift in focus to their next, currently unannounced project. The studio has initiated a media blackout, indicating a period of silence regarding future developments.
While Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 8 is slated for release later this year, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, confirmed via Twitter and a statement to VideoGamer that the team's full attention is dedicated to their next endeavor. Vincke's tweet expressed nostalgia for the journey with Baldur's Gate 3, but emphasized that the studio's story is far from over.
This new project will not be a Baldur's Gate sequel or any other D&D-related title. Instead, it marks a departure into uncharted territory for Larian, a decision made after internal discussions failed to generate sufficient enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate continuation.
Previous statements from Vincke offer only vague hints. In November 2023, he alluded to the next game pushing boundaries, expressing excitement about its potential. He also mentioned the possibility of a future Divinity: Original Sin sequel in July 2023, but emphasized that it wouldn't be the immediate next project, given the team's need for creative rejuvenation after the intensive development of Baldur's Gate 3.
The nature of Larian's next game remains entirely speculative. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, a shift to science fiction, a modern setting, or even a different genre entirely is plausible, though likely years away from release. The media blackout suggests a significant period of development before any further information is revealed.
