Gameplay Details:

Tong-its uses a standard 52-card deck (no jokers) and is played by three players. Card values are: Ace (1 point), Jacks, Queens, Kings (10 points each), and other cards at face value.

The Goal: Form sets and runs to minimize the number of unmatched cards in your hand.

  • Runs: Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., ♥4, ♥5, ♥6). Aces are low.
  • Sets: Three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., ♥7, ♣7, ♦7). A card can only be part of one combination.

How to Play:

  1. The Deal: The dealer is randomly chosen for the first hand and then rotates to the winner of each hand. Thirteen cards are dealt to the dealer, twelve to each other player. The remaining cards form the stock pile.

  2. Your Turn: Draw a card from either the stock or the discard pile (only from the discard pile if you can immediately meld it). If you meld from the discard, you must show the meld.

  3. Melding: You may optionally meld sets or runs, laying them face up on the table. At least one meld is required to "open" your hand. A set of four can be melded face down for a bonus.

  4. Laying Off (sapaw): Optionally add cards to existing melds (yours or others'). This prevents the other player from drawing on their next turn.

  5. Discard: End your turn by discarding one card face up onto the discard pile.
