Marvel Snap's Second Anniversary Brings Doctor Doom 2099: Top Deck Strategies
Marvel Snap continues its second-year run by introducing alternate versions of popular characters, and this time it's Doctor Doom's turn with the exciting 2099 variant. This guide explores the best strategies for incorporating Doctor Doom 2099 into your decks.
Understanding Doctor Doom 2099
Doctor Doom 2099 is a 4-cost, 2-power card with a unique ability: After each turn, if you played exactly one card, a DoomBot 2099 is added to a random location. DoomBot 2099 (also 4-cost, 2-power) provides an ongoing buff: All other DoomBots and Doom gain +1 Power. This synergy extends to the regular Doctor Doom card as well.
The key is playing one card per turn. Early deployment of Doom 2099 can yield three DoomBot 2099s, significantly boosting power. However, the random placement of DoomBots presents a risk, and Enchantress can entirely negate their effects.
Top Doctor Doom 2099 Decks
Two primary deck archetypes effectively utilize Doctor Doom 2099:
1. Spectrum Ongoing Deck:
This budget-friendly deck (only Doom 2099 is a Series 5 card) aims for early Doom 2099 deployment using cards like Psylocke or Electro. Strategies include leveraging Wong, Klaw, and Doctor Doom for widespread power boosts, or utilizing Electro to pair high-cost cards like Onslaught with DoomBot 2099s and Spectrum. Cosmo is crucial for mitigating Enchantress's impact. This deck offers flexibility, allowing for adaptation if Doom 2099's early play is missed. Example decklist: Ant-Man, Goose, Psylocke, Captain America, Cosmo, Electro, Doom 2099, Wong, Klaw, Doctor Doom, Spectrum, Onslaught.
2. Patriot Deck:
This similarly cost-effective deck (again, only Doom 2099 is Series 5) utilizes a Patriot strategy, deploying cards like Mister Sinister and Brood early. Doom 2099 follows, with Blue Marvel and Doctor Doom or Spectrum providing further power. Zabu provides cost reduction for early deployment of 4-cost cards if the Patriot strategy falters. The deck's flexibility allows for strategic skipping of DoomBot 2099 spawns to accommodate other powerful plays. However, it's highly susceptible to Enchantress, though Super Skrull offers some counterplay. Example decklist: Ant-Man, Zabu, Dazzler, Mister Sinister, Patriot, Brood, Doom 2099, Super Skrull, Iron Lad, Blue Marvel, Doctor Doom, Spectrum.
Is Doctor Doom 2099 Worth the Investment?
Despite the relatively weak cards (Daken and Miek) included in the Spotlight Caches, Doctor Doom 2099 is a worthwhile acquisition. His power and deck-building versatility make him a meta-defining card. Using Collector's Tokens is preferable, but don't hesitate to obtain him this month; he's likely to remain a top-tier card unless significantly nerfed.
