Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame system from previous leagues. This guide details how to find, complete, and maximize your rewards from Expeditions, including the Detonation mechanic, the Passive Skill Tree, and valuable rewards.

Expedition Mechanics & Detonation

Expedition Map Node

Expeditions are marked on the Atlas with a light blue, spiral icon. You can guarantee an Expedition encounter by placing an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot.

Upon entering an Expedition map, locate the central area with markers and an NPC. The core gameplay involves strategically placing Explosives near markers to trigger events:

  • Red Markers: Detonating near these spawns Runic Monsters. Larger markers yield larger monster packs. These packs are further empowered by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: These relics provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers, influencing monster damage or chest loot rarity.
  • Black Markers (Spiral Icon): Explosives placed near these spawn Excavated Chests containing Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, and high-tier gear.

Use the Explosives UI to visualize the area of effect. Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal efficiency. After placing Explosives, activate the Detonator. You can safely retreat after detonation and return to engage enemies later.

Expedition Pinnacle Map

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. Use these with Dannig in your hideout to access the Expedition Pinnacle Map. This offers a significantly larger-scale Expedition with increased Explosives and a chance to encounter Olroth, the Pinnacle Boss. Olroth's presence is indicated by a skull on the minimap. Defeating Olroth grants double Expedition Passive Skill Tree points.

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Located within the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition tree enhances the event. Points are earned by defeating Olroth. The tree features Notable nodes offering significant boosts, but also increasing difficulty.

Notable Nodes:

Notable Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but increases radius and placement range; reduces enemy life. N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always have 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, faster Detonation chains N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward increases. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further boosts at increased difficulty. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the significant reduction in Explosives.
