Chris Evans Says He Isn't Returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Another Avengers

by Ryan Mar 16,2025

Chris Evans has definitively stated that he will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Avengers: Doomsday or any other future films, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise. Evans directly refuted a Deadline article claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling the report "not true." This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, who plays the new Captain America, who initially stated his manager had informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently confirmed that Evans himself denied this in a recent conversation. Evans reiterated his retirement from the MCU, stating he is "happily retired."

While Evans did reprise his role as Johnny Storm from the Fox Fantastic Four films in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a smaller, comedic role, distinct from his main Captain America arc.

The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following Jonathan Majors' removal from the franchise due to assault and harassment charges. Majors' portrayal of Kang, initially positioned as the MCU's next Thanos-level antagonist, has left Marvel Studios seemingly re-evaluating their plans.

Robert Downey Jr. is now confirmed to play Doctor Doom as the new major villain, sparking speculation about other original Avengers returning. However, currently, no other returns have been officially confirmed. Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange will not be in Avengers: Doomsday, but will have a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
