by Jason Jan 25,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind memories of sunshine and fun. I'm feeling refreshed and ready for autumn, and I appreciate sharing those summer moments with all of you – you're the best gaming buddies anyone could ask for! Today's article is packed with game reviews, new releases, and some tempting sales. Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us a second chance at many classic games, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's adventures. This collection features two games, both previously unlocalized, building upon the storylines of earlier titles. The sequel significantly enhances the first game, making it a rewarding experience to finally have them both in English.

The Investigations games offer a fresh perspective, showing the prosecution's side of the courtroom drama. While the core gameplay remains familiar – searching for clues, questioning witnesses, and solving cases – the shift in perspective and unique presentation adds excitement. Edgeworth's narration brings a distinct feel. The pacing might feel less structured than other Ace Attorney games, potentially leading to some lengthy cases, but fans of the series will appreciate this sub-series. If the first game feels slow, persevere – the second is far superior.

Bonus features are plentiful, including an art and music gallery, a story mode for relaxed play, and the ability to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A convenient dialog history feature is a welcome addition.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a compelling contrast between the two games. The official localization of the second game is a major win, and the extra features create an excellent package. This release completes the Ace Attorney collection on Switch (excluding the Professor Layton crossover). If you've enjoyed the other titles, this is a must-have.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising but welcome addition to the gaming landscape. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels provide a steep challenge, although an easier mode is available for those who prefer a less demanding experience.

The gameplay is largely similar to the original, with Yumetaro's star serving as a versatile tool for both attack and puzzle-solving. New collectibles provide customization options, rewarding players for tackling more challenging sections. While the game can be completed relatively quickly, the difficulty remains high. Frequent checkpoints mitigate frustration, and the charming visuals and music help maintain a positive experience.

Gimmick! 2 successfully builds upon its predecessor without losing its unique identity. Fans of the original will be delighted, and challenging platforming enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, those seeking a casual experience should be warned – this game maintains the high difficulty of its predecessor, even with the easier mode.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, it works well, although the Switch's hardware sometimes struggles to deliver optimal performance. Despite this, the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and eerie visuals remain enjoyable.

The weapon system adds a unique dynamic, with the main gun, melee weapon, and rotating third weapon requiring strategic management. Mastering the rhythm of weapon usage and defensive maneuvers is key to success.

While differing significantly from its predecessor, Mecha Therion retains the original's distinct atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version remains a worthwhile experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games often cater primarily to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. The game excels in fan service, delivering strong writing and meta-systems that reward dedicated fans.

However, the game's appeal to non-fans is limited. The few mini-games offered lack depth and replayability, and the story will resonate mainly with those familiar with the Umamusume universe.

Even for fans, Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash feels unbalanced, prioritizing presentation over gameplay. While the visuals, sound, and world are well-executed, the limited content may disappoint, particularly those without prior attachment to the franchise.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft's library: charming 8-bit games. Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola, all fully localized for the first time in English.

The collection includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries. The games themselves vary in quality. 53 Stations is challenging due to its weapon mechanics, but possesses unique charm. Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, while The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but inconsistent.

Sunsoft fans and retro gaming enthusiasts will appreciate this collection. The careful handling of these games, along with their first-time English localization, makes this a worthwhile purchase.
