Sony's PC gaming policy sparks backlash among players. The company's requirement for PSN tethering, even in single-player titles, and the service's limited regional availability, restricts sales of recent releases.
Sony recently announced policy adjustments. While PSN tethering on PC isn't entirely abandoned, some concessions have been made. PSN tethering will be optional for the following games:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players opting for PSN tethering will receive in-game bonuses:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: The Black Bear armor set, the first "Lost Things" chest, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points for unlocking features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In November, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged investor concerns regarding PSN connection requirements, emphasizing their importance for security and order. While he linked the restrictions to service-based games, he didn't clarify how mandatory PSN accounts enhance security in single-player experiences like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.
Times have changed. The gaming landscape demands a reassessment of these practices.
