Unveiling "The Invincible Iron Man"
Edwards shared never-before-seen images and gameplay footage from the cancelled title, originally slated for release in 2003. The game, internally titled "The Invincible Iron Man," reflected the character's classic comic book name. Development followed the release of Genepool Software's X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge. His posts included the title card, Genepool's logo, gameplay screenshots, and original Xbox footage showcasing the startup screen and a desert-set tutorial.
Activision's Cancellation Decision
Despite positive fan response, Activision cancelled "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development began. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving the team unemployed. While Activision never publicly explained the cancellation, Edwards suggested several possibilities: delays to the film adaptation, dissatisfaction with the game's progress, or perhaps another developer's competing project.
A Unique Iron Man Design
The game's Iron Man design, noticeably different from Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU portrayal, closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version of the early 2000s. Edwards stated the design choice was the artist's decision.
Edwards promised more gameplay footage, but at the time of this writing, this has yet to materialize. This forgotten project offers a fascinating glimpse into what could have been.
