Top GBA & NDS Games Arrive on Switch

by Emma Feb 02,2025

A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on the often-overlooked Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Unlike the readily available GBA games on the Nintendo Switch Online app, this list highlights those found independently on the Switch eShop. Ten fantastic titles are featured – four GBA and six Nintendo DS – presented without any specific ranking.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A worthwhile play, especially for comparison, offering a streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, even appealing to those not usually drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This excellent side-scrolling action series, starting with Mega Man Zero, might have some initial rough edges, but these are smoothed out in later installments. Begin your journey here and explore the series further.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by the significant differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The clever concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is fully realized. While later entries show diminishing returns, this title offers substantial fun.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is worth playing through entirely, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it's even preferable to the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on the right day. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes grinding enjoyable. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its appeal, establishing Shantae as a console mainstay. This game occupies a unique space, originating from an unreleased GBA title (which is soon to be released).

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game, given its origins, but not localized until later. The Ace Attorney series blends investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes, offering humorous and engaging stories. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick shares the strong writing but introduces unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your own death. A captivating and highly recommended title.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports exist, none perfectly replicate the original experience. The Switch version is a solid alternative if you lack access to a Nintendo DS.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow is highlighted due to improved button controls replacing the original touch controls. However, all three games in the collection are recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise challenging to adapt outside the DS/3DS environment. Atlus's adaptation is playable, and each Etrian Odyssey game offers a substantial RPG experience. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a rewarding, albeit complex, adventure.
