TennoCon 2024 lifts the veil on the hotly anticipated Warframe: 1999

by Isabella Mar 25,2025

Get ready for an exhilarating journey back to 1999 with Warframe's latest update, promising to be one of the most remarkable additions to the series. The excitement kicked off at the ninth TennoCon, which showcased some mind-blowing reveals, setting the stage for what's to come.

Before diving into the main event, a prologue quest titled "The Lotus Eaters" will be released in August 2024. This quest will reunite players with one of Warframe’s most iconic characters and follows the "Whispers in the Walls" storyline, introducing the world of 1999. Alongside the narrative, the update will introduce Sevatgoth Prime along with their exclusive weapons. To fully experience Warframe: 1999, players must complete all story content up to and including "The Lotus Eaters" before the update's release in Winter 2024.

Set during the titular year, Warframe: 1999 unfolds on an alternate Earth where the Y2K virus poses a deadly threat. The action takes place in the city of Höllvania, a 90s wonderland now overrun by Techrot. Players will navigate this environment using the new Atomicycles, which allow for bullet jumps, drifts, and even serve as makeshift explosives. Leading the charge are the six heroes of the Hex, each donning a Protoframe that showcases the human inside.

Arthur, the leader, wields Excalibur, supported by allies like Aoi with Mag, and Quincy, who wears the newly introduced CYTE-09. This frame will also be available in the Origin system, complete with a stylish beret. The team is brought to life by renowned voice actors including Alpha Takahashi, Ben Starr, Melissa Medina, and Amelia Tyler, known for her role in Baldur's Gate 3. Players can get to know these characters through a 1999-style instant messaging system, adding a personal touch to the experience.

To fully immerse players in the 1999 vibe, the update introduces On-lyne, a 90s boy band led by Zeke, voiced by Nick Apostolides. This band, corrupted by the Technocyte Coda, becomes a unique enemy. Their catchy hit single, "Party of Your Lifetime," is now available on streaming platforms.

One of the most exciting features of this update is the enhancement of the fashion system, the true endgame of Warframe. Players can now switch between two fashion frame loadouts during battle, and the new Gemini Skins allow players to bring Protoframes like Arthur and Aoi into the Origin system. These skins are available for frames like Excalibur and come with extensive voiced lines, adding depth to the characters.

Anime Arthur and Aoi

Beyond the main update, Digital Extremes is collaborating with animation studio THE LINE to produce an anime short related to Warframe: 1999, set to launch later this year. Additionally, players can now acquire stunning high-fidelity Heirloom skins for Ember, with a Rhino skin following in early 2025.

With Warframe: 1999 scheduled for Winter 2024, there's plenty to catch up on and more to look forward to. Make sure to download Warframe now from the App Store to stay ahead of the game.
