Tencent, a leading Chinese technology company, has reportedly secured a majority stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular mobile games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition grants Tencent a controlling 51.4% ownership of Kuro Games, following a previous investment in 2023 and the departure of other shareholders.
While Tencent now holds the majority stake, reports suggest Kuro Games will maintain its operational independence. This mirrors Tencent's approach with other successful gaming studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games stated this shift will foster a "more stable external environment" and support its long-term independent strategy. Tencent has not yet issued an official statement.
Kuro Games' portfolio includes the action RPG Punishing: Gray Raven and the recently released open-world RPG Wuthering Waves. Both titles have achieved significant commercial success, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue and continuing to receive regular updates. Wuthering Waves has even earned a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards. This acquisition signifies a strategic move by Tencent to further solidify its position within the mobile gaming market.
