Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio Fuels AAA Game Speculation
A recently surfaced job posting confirms Sony Interactive Entertainment has established a new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks the 20th first-party studio under the PlayStation umbrella and is currently developing a high-profile, original AAA IP for the PS5.
The news has generated considerable excitement within the gaming community, given PlayStation's impressive track record with its first-party studios. The addition of this new, unannounced studio to names like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games further strengthens PlayStation's development capabilities. This expansion follows previous acquisitions of studios such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite.
Several theories speculate on the studio's origins. One possibility centers around a Bungie spin-off team, formed following the July 2024 layoffs at Bungie. Approximately 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment, potentially forming the core of this new Los Angeles-based team.
Another strong contender is the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer. Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024. Following Deviation's dissolution, many of its employees joined PlayStation, with Blundell at the helm of this new venture. Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, it's considered a more likely candidate for the new studio.
While the exact nature of the project remains undisclosed, speculation abounds. It's possible the studio is continuing or reviving Deviation Games' previous AAA project. Regardless, the confirmation of yet another first-party PlayStation studio working on a new game is welcome news for fans, even if an official announcement may be years away.
