Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Release Date Announced

by Sadie Mar 04,2025

The next installment in the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is slated for a March 2027 release.

Paramount Pictures has officially announced a March 19, 2027 theatrical release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, as reported by Variety. While the release date is confirmed, plot details and further casting information remain undisclosed.

This sequel comes as no surprise, considering the phenomenal success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film raked in a remarkable $218 million domestically and over $420 million globally, solidifying its position as the highest-grossing film in the Sonic franchise, surpassing the initial film's impressive $148 million. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the initial controversy surrounding the character's original design, which underwent significant alterations during post-production.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also holds the distinction of being the second highest-grossing video game movie in North America, trailing only the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, further fueling the long-standing rivalry between Nintendo and Sega on the big screen.

PlayThe Sonic live-action universe continues to expand, now encompassing three feature films and a Knuckles spin-off streaming series.

Based on the beloved Sega video game series, the films follow Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he confronts his arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Each film has introduced additional characters from the Sonic universe, including Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), with Sonic 3 finally introducing Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves).

While Sonic 3 hinted at the next character joining the franchise, we'll refrain from spoilers. For a detailed look at new characters and a review of Sonic 3, please refer to our dedicated articles.
