Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Solo Path, Avoiding Avengers and X-Men

by Mila Apr 27,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the likelihood of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signal the character's "end." This statement comes amidst speculation fueled by the massive success of *Deadpool & Wolverine* and the character's desire to join the Avengers within the film. Many believed that Marvel Studios would be eager to integrate the 'Merc with a Mouth' into the superhero ensemble for next year's *Avengers: Doomsday*.

Last month's *Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal* was filled with veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, confirming a significant presence of the X-Men in the film. Grammer, who portrayed Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, made his MCU debut in *The Marvels'* post-credits scene. Stewart, known for playing Charles Xavier/Professor X in the X-Men films, appeared briefly in the MCU through *Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness* as part of the Illuminati. Meanwhile, McKellen, who played Magneto, has yet to appear in the MCU, as have Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops). This raises the intriguing possibility that *Avengers: Doomsday* might secretly be an Avengers vs. X-Men movie.

Notably, Reynolds' name was absent from the extensive list of confirmed stars for *Avengers: Doomsday*, despite Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in *Deadpool & Wolverine*, being included. Reynolds' recent comments to Time magazine further suggest that a formal promotion of Deadpool to the Avengers or X-Men is not in the cards. He stated, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that."

However, Reynolds hinted at the possibility of a surprise cameo appearance for Deadpool in a supporting role, citing the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in *Deadpool & Wolverine*. As for Deadpool's future, Reynolds mentioned he is currently working on a new project involving an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped on the details.

This could signal another *Deadpool* movie rich in cameos, similar to *Deadpool & Wolverine*. Potential returning characters might include Wesley Snipes' Blade, Channing Tatum's Gambit, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23. Reynolds emphasized his preference for keeping Deadpool "isolated," which aligns with the character's unique appeal.

Regarding Avengers: Doomsday, apart from the confirmed cast, little else is known. Anthony Mackie, set to reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, recently expressed his belief that the film will recapture "that old Marvel feeling" audiences have always loved. Mackie joins other cast members, including Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch), in sharing their excitement for the upcoming Marvel epic.

Additionally, a leaked set photo from *Avengers: Doomsday* sparked intense speculation among the MCU fandom, with some interpreting it as ominous for the X-Men's fate. Speculation also surrounds Oscar Isaac's potential appearance as Moon Knight, fueled by his withdrawal from this month's Star Wars Celebration due to changes in his production schedule.

Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has confirmed that the *Avengers* livestream did not include the entire cast of *Doomsday*, hinting at more surprises to come. He stated, "We revealed many, not all," during a video call at CinemaCon.
