Project Zomboid: Mastering Car Hotwiring Techniques

by Caleb Apr 01,2025

The expansive world of Project Zomboid offers a vast playable map that, while walkable from end to end, is best navigated with a vehicle for practical gameplay. Fortunately, many cars in the game are still functional, and if you can't find the keys, hotwiring them is a viable option. This process is straightforward and can be mastered with just a few button presses, but there are specific requirements you need to meet before you can start collecting cars. While you don't need the best build to hotwire, keeping these requirements in mind will help you efficiently jack vehicles in your next playthrough.

How Does Hotwiring Work in Project Zomboid?

Hotwiring a car in Project Zomboid allows you to drive it as long as it remains fueled and in good condition, even without the keys. To hotwire a vehicle, you must achieve at least Level 1 in Electrical and Level 2 in Mechanics skills. Alternatively, selecting the Burglar occupation during character creation bypasses these skill requirements, enabling you to hotwire vehicles from the start.

How to Hotwire a Car in Project Zomboid

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Open the vehicle radial menu (default key is V).
  3. Select the Hotwire option and wait for a few seconds.

Once your character meets the necessary requirements, follow these steps on any working vehicle you can access. The hotwiring process is automatic; once completed, press W to start the engine. Remember, not all vehicles will have fuel, so it's wise to have some gas ready in Project Zomboid.

How to Level Electrical and Mechanical Skills

If you choose not to start as a Burglar, you can manually increase your Electrical and Mechanical skill levels through in-game activities. To gain XP in these skills, engage in the following:

  • Electrical: Dismantle electronics such as digital watches, radios, and televisions.
  • Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.

Additionally, reading books and magazines can boost your skill levels. These can be found while exploring homes and commercial buildings. Check mailboxes, storage sheds, and bookshelves for readable items during your looting sessions. If you're running a Project Zomboid server as an admin, you can directly grant skill XP to players using the "/addxp" command, following the syntax provided in the chat box.

For dismantling or installing components, you'll need a screwdriver or a suitable tool. To work on a vehicle, right-click on a part and select the Vehicle Mechanics option.
