PlayStation 5 Disc Drive Shortage Frustrating Fans

by Christian Jan 26,2025

The persistent shortage of standalone PlayStation 5 disc drives continues to plague gamers, particularly those who have purchased the disc-less PS5 Pro. Since the PS5 Pro's November 2024 launch, demand for the add-on drive has far outstripped supply.

This shortage, exacerbated by scalpers reselling drives at inflated prices, mirrors the initial PS5 console launch difficulties in 2020. Both US and UK PS Direct websites consistently show the drive as out of stock, with any available units quickly disappearing. While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally offer the drive, securing one remains a challenge for most consumers.

Sony's silence on the matter is notable, especially considering their past efforts to address PS5 production challenges. The PS5 Pro's omission of a built-in disc drive has sparked considerable debate, adding approximately $80 to the console's already high cost when purchasing the drive directly from Sony. Coupled with scalping activities, this leaves many PlayStation fans with little option but to wait for improved supply and reduced demand – a prospect that currently seems distant.

The situation remains unresolved, leaving many PS5 Pro owners unable to utilize physical game discs. The lack of official comment from Sony only adds to the frustration felt by affected players.
