Simu Liu, the Marvel star, is spearheading efforts to revive the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu's response to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively working with rights holders to bring the project to the big screen.
This follows the film's cancellation, confirmed earlier this month by Donnie Yen, who was originally attached to star. Yen cited years of work and personal investment, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
The 2017 announcement of the adaptation, which subsequently vanished, had generated significant excitement. The original video game, released in 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, garnered critical acclaim (earning an 8/10 from IGN), following the story of undercover detective Wei Shen infiltrating a Hong Kong Triad. Its popularity, however, failed to secure a sequel.
Liu's involvement breathes new life into the possibility of a Sleeping Dogs movie. Whether he secures the necessary rights and successfully launches the project remains uncertain.
