Tidepool Games has launched an exciting new addition to the Android gaming scene with MageTrain, a fast-paced pixel art game that blends elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes. If you're a fan of Nimble Quest, MageTrain will feel like a delightful throwback, drawing significant inspiration from it.
What’s MageTrain Like?
In MageTrain, you navigate a line of heroes through various arenas, much like guiding a snake. Each hero in your train automatically attacks enemies, but your role is crucial in managing their positions and avoiding collisions with obstacles and foes. The placement of your heroes within the train affects their abilities, adding a strategic layer to the game.
At launch, MageTrain offers nine unique heroes, including one who throws birds, each with distinct skills that vary based on their position in the train. Your journey takes you through eight diverse dungeons where you'll encounter 28 different enemy types and have the opportunity to acquire 30 skills to enhance your team. Along the way, you'll gather gold and power-ups to bolster your chances of success.
The roguelike nature of MageTrain ensures that no two runs are the same. You'll navigate branching paths, make critical upgrade choices, and aim to survive as long as possible. This structure is reminiscent of games like Slay the Spire or FTL, where there are no fixed levels and no option to save your progress mid-run. A single mistake, whether crashing into something or being overwhelmed by enemies, means starting over.
It Isn’t Slow-Paced
The thrill of MageTrain lies in the constant improvement you experience with each run, even when you don't succeed. You'll quickly learn when to play defensively, when to launch an aggressive attack, and when to simply hold on for another half-minute of gameplay.
