Keanu Reeves has provided the most promising update yet on the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 cult hit Constantine. Playing the role of John Constantine, an occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics, Reeves has been a fan favorite since his performance in the original film. Following the success of The Matrix, fans have been clamoring for a sequel over the past two decades, and it seems their wishes might finally be coming true.
In a recent interview with Inverse, Reeves shared exciting news about the project. "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, 'Okay,'" he revealed. This marks a significant step forward, as the project is now moving into the scripting phase.
However, it's important to note that while this development is promising, Constantine 2 is not yet a confirmed project within the rebooted DC Universe (DCU). DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran have not officially mentioned the sequel as part of their lineup. Therefore, the film remains on the edge of possibility.
Reeves also teased that if Constantine 2 does come to fruition, it will be set in the same universe as the original film. "We're not going off that," he assured fans, adding with humor, "John Constantine's going to be tortured even more."
Adding to the anticipation, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently shared his own update with ComicBook. He admitted that the script for Constantine 2 is already in his inbox, but he's hesitant to read it out of a desire for it to be excellent. "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough," he said. "I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
