Jack Wall on Missing Mass Effect 3: 'Fallouts Happen'

by Daniel Feb 20,2025

Composer Jack Wall explains his absence from Mass Effect 3's soundtrack. Wall, celebrated for his work on the 80s-inspired scores of the first two Mass Effect games, notably Mass Effect 2's acclaimed "Suicide Mission," didn't return for the third installment. In a recent interview with The Guardian, he attributed this to a disagreement with then-development chief Casey Hudson.

Wall stated that Hudson wasn't entirely satisfied with his work on Mass Effect 2, despite its critical acclaim and BAFTA nomination. While he remained somewhat tight-lipped about the specifics, characterizing it as a common industry occurrence, he did elaborate on the considerable challenges involved in completing the Mass Effect 2 soundtrack, particularly the "Suicide Mission" sequence. He described the process as incredibly demanding, with limited support from BioWare due to the intense pressure of the game's development.

Despite the difficulties, Wall expressed pride in the final result, considering the "Suicide Mission" sequence one of the best game endings he's ever experienced. Following Mass Effect 2, Wall transitioned to composing for the Call of Duty franchise, most recently contributing to Black Ops 6. BioWare, currently focusing on the next Mass Effect title after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, hasn't yet revealed its choice of composer for the upcoming project.
