The game's initial 2022 launch was a resounding success, peaking at 153,000 concurrent Steam players. However, a dramatic 99% player drop followed swiftly. Warner Bros. Games responded by shutting down the project in June 2023, controversially classifying it as an "open beta test." A relaunch with updates occurred in May 2024, but failed to recapture its initial momentum.
This relaunch, effectively MultiVersus 2.0, followed the abrupt June 2023 shutdown, leaving many players, particularly those who purchased the premium edition, feeling frustrated and betrayed.
