Civilization VII has been crowned the most anticipated PC game of 2025 at the PC Gamer's PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted event on December 6th. This accolade highlights the game's significant buzz and anticipation among gamers and industry experts. The event showcased the top 25 most exciting upcoming games, ranked by a panel of over 70 developers, content creators, and editors.
The event, a nearly three-hour livestream, featured new trailers and updates for various titles, including Civilization VII. Other notable games on the list included Doom: The Dark Ages (2nd place), Monster Hunter Wilds (3rd place), and Slay the Spire 2 (4th place). The absence of Hollow Knight: Silksong from the list was a notable surprise.
Civilization VII's launch is scheduled for February 11th, 2025, across PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch platforms.
A New Era of Campaign Gameplay
Addressing player feedback regarding campaign completion rates in Civilization VI, Creative Director Ed Beach introduced a groundbreaking new mechanic: "Ages." This system divides a single playthrough into three distinct eras: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Players can transition between historically and geographically linked civilizations at the end of each Age, mirroring the rise and fall of real-world empires.
This innovative approach allows players to experience multiple civilizations within a single campaign, offering fresh perspectives on cultural, military, diplomatic, and economic strategies. Leaders persist across Ages, maintaining player connection and rivalry. An "overbuild" feature allows construction atop existing structures, while Wonders and key buildings remain consistent throughout the playthrough. This system promises a more engaging and complete campaign experience.
