DC's upcoming film adaptation of The Authority faces setbacks, according to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Initially announced as a major project within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the film's development has proven challenging.
Gunn cited the success of Amazon's The Boys and the evolving narrative as contributing factors to the delays. He described The Authority as the "hardest" project to adapt, given the need to create a compelling story in a landscape already saturated with similar themes and characters. The film's production has been temporarily sidelined, prioritizing other projects and character arcs already underway.
While The Authority is currently on the back burner, one member, The Engineer/Angela Spica, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman film. The Engineer, known for her immense power, technological prowess, and telepathic abilities, is a significant figure within the WildStorm universe. Other Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters projects have also experienced hurdles. Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, has encountered production delays. However, Booster Gold is progressing smoothly, and Paradise Lost remains a high priority, with the pilot script currently in development. Swamp Thing, while delayed due to director James Mangold's other commitments, is not considered crucial to the overall narrative arc of the DC Universe.
The future of The Authority remains uncertain, but the ongoing development of other DCU projects suggests a continued commitment to expanding the universe's cinematic landscape.
