In The Witcher 4, a significant shift is underway. Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, known as Ciri, steps into the spotlight, replacing Geralt as the protagonist. This change naturally sparks considerable curiosity about how gameplay, especially combat, will be affected. CD Projekt Red recently offered some intriguing insights during a podcast episode.
The developers highlighted a trailer scene depicting Ciri battling a monster. She uses a chain—a charming callback to The Witcher 1—to subdue her foe. However, it's her fighting style that truly stands out: fluid, acrobatic, and unlike anything Geralt could manage.
The developers themselves drew a compelling contrast: "There was this one scene where we see the chain, which is a tribute to The Witcher 1. When she grabs the monster’s head with it and pins it to the ground, she also performs an additional flip, which was really cool because you can’t imagine Geralt doing something like that. He’s very… I’d say he’s agile, but he’s also very… he feels almost like a ‘block’ in a way—he’s bulky and heavy. And she [Ciri] is just… she’s practically like liquid compared to [Geralt]."
This description underscores the fundamental difference between Ciri and Geralt's combat approaches. Geralt relies on strength and precise strikes, while Ciri's combat is characterized by speed, dynamism, and breathtaking agility. Her acrobatic maneuvers promise a thrilling, fresh combat experience, a stark departure from Geralt's grounded style.
With Ciri leading the charge in The Witcher 4, players can anticipate a faster, more fluid combat system perfectly mirroring her unique skills and personality. As CD Projekt Red continues to unveil details, anticipation builds. Will Ciri's gameplay surpass Geralt's legendary status? Only time will tell.
