TikTok Banned in US, Access Blocked

by Aaliyah Feb 21,2025

TikTok's U.S. ban is now in effect, preventing American users from accessing the platform. Attempts to open the app result in a message stating its unavailability due to recently enacted legislation. While the app expresses hope for reinstatement under a future administration, citing President Trump's suggestion of a potential solution, no concrete timeline exists.

The Supreme Court's unanimous rejection of TikTok's appeal solidified the ban, despite acknowledging the app's popularity and the data collection practices of numerous other applications. The court cited national security concerns regarding data collection and TikTok's ties to a foreign entity as justification. The ruling emphasized Congress's determination that divestiture was necessary, asserting that the ban does not infringe on First Amendment rights.

While President Trump expressed a potential 90-day delay to the ban, allowing time for a U.S. or allied entity to acquire the app, this remains uncertain. The lack of a buyer precipitated the immediate ban. Concurrently, other apps linked to ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, including CapCut, Lemon8, and Marvel Snap, have also become inaccessible in the U.S.
