Disney movie veteran Jon Favreau is collaborating with the iconic studio on a groundbreaking Disney+ series that will revive the classic animated character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

According to a report from Deadline, Favreau will leverage his expertise in both live-action and animation to introduce Oswald to the Disney streaming platform through a television series. He is set to take on the roles of writer and producer for the project. While the plot and casting details remain under wraps, the anticipation for this innovative blend of animation and live-action is already building.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit holds a significant place in Disney's pantheon of beloved characters. Originally conceived by Walt Disney, Oswald starred in 26 silent cartoons from 1927 to 1928. However, due to a rights dispute, Universal gained control of the character, leading to a challenging period for Disney that ultimately paved the way for the creation of Mickey Mouse. As detailed in our in-depth look at Disney’s 100-year history, the loss of Oswald was a pivotal moment for the company.

Disney regained the rights to Oswald in 2006 and celebrated this milestone with the release of its first new original short featuring the character in 95 years in 2022. With Favreau's upcoming series, Disney aims to showcase Oswald as more than a nostalgic symbol of its past. Although a specific release date for the series has not been announced, fans can look forward to this unique hybrid project in the future.

PlayWhile Favreau is focused on reviving one of Disney's oldest animated characters, he has also been instrumental in shaping some of its newer franchises. Star Wars enthusiasts recognize him as a key figure in expanding the galaxy far, far away with projects such as The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka. Additionally, Favreau has left a lasting impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both behind and in front of the camera over the past 15 years, and directed the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Fans can anticipate his return to directing with the upcoming theatrical release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026.

As Oswald the Lucky Rabbit prepares for his official comeback within the Disney fold, his most recent cinematic outing, Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, a horror movie featuring Ghostbusters actor Ernie Hudson, was unveiled just last year in 2023, shortly after Oswald entered the public domain.
