Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Have a New Gimmick

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: A Hidden Mouse Mode?

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might have a surprising extra function: they could operate like computer mice. While the likelihood of widespread developer adoption for this mode remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The intriguing clue comes from Famiboards user LiC, known for uncovering Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data, a rich source of Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024, recently revealed shipments of polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles." These tapes, intended "to stick to game console handles," are reportedly sized 90 x 90mm—potentially large enough to cover the entire back of the new Joy-Cons, though likely requiring trimming during assembly. Two model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were also mentioned, but these haven't been found in public component databases, hinting at unreleased products.

This isn't unprecedented in the handheld gaming world. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, already features a right controller that doubles as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing for smoother surface movement. Considering the Switch 2 is also rumored to include magnetic rails for controller attachment, similar to the Legion GO, this shared feature adds further weight to the speculation.

The discovery of "mouse soles" in the Switch 2's parts list, therefore, fuels speculation about this potential mouse-like functionality. Whether this feature will become a significant part of the Switch 2 experience remains to be seen, but it certainly adds an interesting layer to the anticipation surrounding Nintendo's next-generation handheld console.
