Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern: A 'Jerk' in Gunn's Superman Film

James Gunn's upcoming reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe introduces a fresh take on Superman, and with it, Nathan Fillion steps into the role of Green Lantern, specifically Guy Gardner. In a recent interview with TV Guide, Fillion revealed that his portrayal of Gardner will be quite different from previous iterations, describing the character as a "jerk." He emphasized that being a Green Lantern doesn't require goodness, just fearlessness, and Gardner embodies this trait to a fault. "He's not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? And that's the answer. That's what you do in that moment,” Fillion explained. He also noted that Gardner’s alter ego suffers from overconfidence, humorously suggesting that Gardner believes he could take on Superman, despite the obvious mismatch in power.

This new Superman film marks the inaugural chapter of the DCU, titled "Gods and Monsters," set to release on July 11, 2025. Alongside Fillion, the cast includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film is both written and directed by James Gunn, promising a new vision for these iconic characters.

Interest in the Green Lanterns extends beyond Gunn's film, as HBO is currently producing a series called "Lanterns," which will explore other members of the superhero alliance. Kyle Chandler will play Hal Jordan, and Aaron Pierre will portray John Stewart. The series is slated to premiere in 2026, expanding the Green Lantern narrative across different media.

With a new take on beloved characters and an expanding universe, fans have much to look forward to in the evolving DCU landscape.
