Microsoft Reveals and Retracts Xbox UI Mockup with Steam Games Tab

by Evelyn Mar 28,2025

Microsoft has recently provided a glimpse into a potential future update for the Xbox UI, which might allow players to view all their PC games installed through various platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store. This revelation came unexpectedly in a blog post titled "Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox," where an image showcased devices including Xbox Series X | S consoles, phones, and tablets. A keen observation by The Verge highlighted a "Steam" tab on one of the device screens, an unusual sight given Valve's digital storefront typically doesn't integrate directly with Microsoft's gaming hardware.

Although the image was quickly removed from the post, it sparked significant interest and speculation. According to The Verge's sources, Microsoft is actively developing this feature, aiming to connect users not just with their Steam library but also with other PC gaming platforms. This would enable players to easily access a comprehensive view of all their installed games across different storefronts. However, as this update is still in its early stages, it may be some time before it becomes available, if it does at all.

Microsoft's strategy over the past decade has been to gradually expand its gaming ecosystem beyond Xbox consoles. This includes bringing titles like Pentiment and Grounded to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, and there are ongoing rumors about the Master Chief Collection potentially coming to PlayStation. The company's efforts to merge Xbox and PC gaming experiences were further emphasized with the "This is an Xbox" campaign, which showcases the versatility of devices capable of running Xbox games.

In an interview with Polygon, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted at a future where PC stores like Itch.io and the Epic Games Store could be accessible directly through Xbox hardware. Looking ahead, reports suggest that Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, expected in 2027, will resemble a PC more closely than any previous Xbox model, further blurring the lines between console and PC gaming.
