Suikoden is back—sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS, set to launch as a free-to-play title. While a release date remains unannounced, a launch later this year is anticipated.
For the uninitiated, the Suikoden series, first launched in 1995, is a collection of RPGs developed and published by Konami, created by Yoshitaka Murayama. Loosely based on the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, the series—known as Suikoden in Japanese—has captivated players with its blend of political intrigue, True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. Eleven entries, including spin-offs, have graced the gaming world, the last arriving in 2012. Now, instead of a direct sequel or full-fledged revival, Konami offers Suikoden STAR LEAP for mobile platforms.
What Awaits in Suikoden STAR LEAP?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while maintaining the series' tradition of assembling 108 heroes. The game employs pixel art, preserving the classic Suikoden aesthetic. See for yourself:
The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes shaping the world. The protagonist, Hou, son of the village chief, experiences a sudden shift in fortune after a successful hunt when his village is attacked. This event propels Hou, alongside his servant Hisui (possessing a mysterious emotional suppression), childhood friend Shirin (driven by a strong sense of justice), and former general-turned-butler Shapur, on a quest to restore peace.
While excitement is palpable, some community members express reservations. Long-time fans, yearning for a proper series continuation, may find the gacha mechanics of STAR LEAP a point of contention.
Further details will emerge upon the game's release. Until then, visit the official website for updates.
