Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty star Idris Elba expressed his desire for a Cyberpunk 2077 live-action, featuring himself and Keanu Reeves. Read on to find out what else he said about the hopeful reunion!
Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Would Be "Whoa."
Welcome Back To Night City
Actor Idris Elba said that he thinks a live-action rendition of Cyberpunk 2077 with himself and Keanu Reeves would be an amazing idea. He shared this ambition to ScreenRant in an interview ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which not only has Elba reprising his role as Knuckles the Enchidna but also will be featuring Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, a fan favorite character newly added to the Sonic trilogy.
Seeing as this is not Elba and Reeves’ first encounter, the actor was then asked about his thoughts if he would be interested in reuniting with the Johnny Silverhand actor in a Cyberpunk 2077 movie, to which he enthusiastically responded, "Oh, man, that's a great question. I think if any film could do a live-action rendition, it could be [ Cyberpunk 2077 ], and I think his character and my character together would be, ‘Whoa.’ So, let's speak that into existence."
Reeves appeared in Cyberpunk 2077 as its deuteragonist, strong-willed rockstar Johnny Silverhand, while Elba played the role of experienced FIA sleeper agent Solomon Reed in the game’s 2023 DLC, Phantom Liberty.
This dream might not be just for wishful thinking—news outlet Variety shared back in October of 2023 that a Cyberpunk 2077 live-action project is surely in the works. CD Projekt Red (CDPR), the masterminds behind the IP, is reported to be working with media company Anonymous Content (True Detective, Mr. Robot, The Revenant, Spotlight). However, it has been a year since the news was announced, and there has yet to be any update regarding its development. Nevertheless, with the outstanding success of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners animated series as well as the live-action The Witcher 3 (another stellar IP from the company) with five complete seasons, a Cyberpunk 2077 live-action wouldn’t be so far off the mark.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Releases Prequel Manga
In other Cyberpunk-related news, it’s not yet over for the franchise’s hit animated series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The first chapter of its prequel manga titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS is now out for selected language, offering a preview to the full volume coming out some time in 2025. As of writing, chapter 1 is available in Japanese, Polish, Italian, German, Spanish, and French, with Traditional Chinese coming later on December 20th. There’s no official date on the English version yet.
Written by the anime’s producer and also CDPR’s comic book and animation narrative director Bartosz Sztybor, MADNESS will follow Edgerunners’ sibling duo, Rebecca and Pilar, before they joined Maine’s squad.
If that’s not enough of a treat, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be getting a Blu-ray release in 2025 as well, so you can watch the journey of David and Lucy once again. And last but not the least, keep your eyes peeled and ears open for the previously teased new Cyberpunk 2077 animated series! CDPR is busy behind the scenes getting all of these developments out, so stay tuned for more.
