High Demand for Pokémon TCG's Prismatic Evolutions Leads to Production Increase
The Pokémon Company is responding to unexpectedly high demand for its latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions, by significantly increasing production. This follows reports of widespread shortages, particularly impacting smaller US retailers.
Addressing the Shortage
As reported by IGN on January 16, 2025, a Pokémon Company spokesperson acknowledged the difficulties some fans are facing in acquiring the new set. The company is actively working to maximize production capacity to meet the unprecedented demand. While this means a wait for some fans, the commitment to increased printing offers reassurance.
Impact on Retailers
The issue was first highlighted by PokeBeach, a Pokémon TCG fan website, on January 4, 2025. The report details how smaller US stores are disproportionately affected, receiving significantly reduced allocations compared to larger retailers like GameStop and Target. This limited distribution, according to Deguire of Player 1 Services (a major Maryland retailer), is due to many non-traditional Pokémon TCG stores placing orders, overwhelming distributors. This limited supply has also led to inflated prices on the secondary market, with the Elite Trainer Box already commanding significantly higher prices than its retail value.
The Prismatic Evolutions Expansion
Initially announced on November 1, 2024, with a release date of January 17, 2025, Prismatic Evolutions features Tera Pokémon ex, new special illustration rare cards, ultra rare Supporter cards, and reprints of popular cards with new artwork. This includes notable cards like Teal Mask Ogerpon ex and Roaring Moon ex, featuring artwork by Yukihiro Tada and Shinji Kanda, respectively.
Additional product releases are planned for February 7th (Surprise Box and Mini Tin), March 7th (Booster Bundle), and April 25th (Pouch Special Collection), 2025. The set was also made available on Pokémon TCG Live on January 16, 2025, allowing players to experience the new cards digitally.
The Pokémon Company's response indicates a commitment to resolving the supply issues and ensuring fans can eventually access this highly anticipated expansion.
