Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Canceled Predecessor
Dynasty Warriors: Origins, launching January 17, 2025, boasts a thrilling hack-and-slash experience set against the backdrop of China's Three Kingdoms Era. However, the game's development journey began with a surprising twist: the cancellation of its planned 10th mainline installment.
Omega Force, the development studio, revealed that technological advancements spurred this decision. Witnessing the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles, the team opted for a strategic shift, ultimately leading to the creation of Origins. This pivot wasn't without sacrifice; a fully developed, stage-clearing Dynasty Warriors title, similar in style to Dynasty Warriors 7, was abandoned.
The scrapped Dynasty Warriors 10, however, wasn't entirely forgotten. Producer Tomohiko Sho highlighted the impact of next-gen consoles in influencing the design of Origins. Producer Masamichi Oba further explained that key elements from the canceled project, such as the free-roaming map and enhanced Three Kingdoms storyline, found their way into Origins. While difficult, abandoning the previous project allowed the team to create a more modern and strategically engaging experience. The result? A game that leverages cutting-edge technology to deliver a refined and immersive Dynasty Warriors experience.
