Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved Baldur's Gate sequel.
A Playable Baldur's Gate Follow-Up Was Abandoned
Larian CEO Swen Vincke recently disclosed in a PC Gamer interview that a follow-up to BG3, already in a playable state, was abandoned in favor of new projects. While acknowledging it was a game fans would have enjoyed, the team felt reluctant to commit several more years to the same IP. The prospect of extensive reworking and a lengthy development cycle ultimately led to the decision to pursue original concepts instead.
High Morale and New Projects
The decision to move on has boosted team morale significantly. The studio is now focused on two unannounced projects, which Vincke describes as their most ambitious yet. This shift away from the Baldur's Gate franchise includes abandoning plans for both a sequel and a BG3 expansion. The team plans a break after releasing Baldur's Gate 3's final major patch (including mod support, cross-play, and new endings) in Fall 2024.
The Future: Beyond Baldur's Gate
Larian's history with the Divinity series suggests that their next project might fall under that banner. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 sequel has been hinted at, Vincke confirmed it will be a different kind of game than fans expect.
In short, while a playable Baldur's Gate 4 existed, Larian's focus has shifted to fresh, unannounced projects, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what the studio will create next.
